During the 8th Annual Rosa Ponselle "ALL MARYLANDERS'" Competition a "Showcase" Concert presenting the previous year's Medalists and awardees will feature as its Master of Ceremonies, Plato Karayanis, Managing Director of The Dallas Opera Company, and a rising young star in the opera world, Lauren Flanigan.
Miss Flanigan has come to be recognized as one of the most exciting and interesting young American talents, whose vocal and acting abilities have made her a favorite with conductors and directors in the United States and Europe. Miss Flanigan has debuted in leading roles and in premiere performances including at the Metropolitan Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, New York City Opera, San Francisco opera, the Canadian Opera and the La Scala and the Cologne Opera Companies.
Miss Flanigan's appearance in the title role of Jack Beeson's Lizzie Borden, will be broadcast live from Lincoln Center on the Public Broadcast System. Miss Flanigan was brought to worldwide attention and critical acclaim creating the title role in the world premiere of Hugo Weisgall's opera Esther at New York City Opera. Her portrayal of Giselda in Verdi's I Lombardi at the Metropolitan Opera opposite Luciano Pavarotti, was broadcast live throughout the United States and released on video.
She has appeared in numerous concert performances in the United States and Europe including with the L'Opera Francais de New York and the Mostly Mozart Festival under the baton of Gerard Schwarz. Guest artists will also include soprano, Mary Amanda Gosíer who was the 1995 Silver Medalist in the "ALL MARYLANDERS" Competition and a Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions; tenor, Rolando Sanz, a former Silver Rose awardee in the 1992 "ALL MARYLANDERS"' Competition, and baritone, Joshua Saxon, a former Silver Rose awardee in the 1997 "ALL MARYLANDERS'" Competition Among the Maryland 1998 awardees to be showcased in the performance will be Gold Medalist, An'draea Keene of Morgan University; Silver Medalist, Anastasia Mastrian of The Catholic University of America and Bronze Medalist, Shalanda Bond of the Baltimore School for the Arts and The Juilliard School. Silver Rose Awardees to perform are Stephanie Chaban; Catherine Justice; Valerie Kopinski; Heather Harris; Colleen Sklamm and Amanda Zalenski.
Musical preparation for the Concert will be by Dr. Michael Cordovana of The Catholic University of America and The Dallas Opera Company.
The piano accompanist will be recording and concert artist from New York City, William Lewis.
The Rosa Ponselle Foundation will be honoring on stage the Gold Medalist Teacher-of-the-Year, Mrs. Elizabeth Daniels. Mrs. Daniels, of The Catholic University of America, has had, over the years, winners in each "ALL MARYLANDERS"' Competitions including three who will appear in the "Showcase" Concert, Mary Amanda Gosier, Anastasia Mastrian and Joshua Saxon.

The "Showcase" Concert is the centerpiece of the "ALL MARYLANDERS"' Competition which will be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday on March 25, 26 and 27 from 12 Noon to 4:00 P.M. The public is invited to attend without charge. No tickets are required.
The Competition program will be preceded on Wednesday, March 24 at 2:00 P.M. by a recording, slide and video lecture presented by Miss Elayne Duke, the President of The Rosa Ponselle Foundation Miss Duke, who created the audio visual program, has presented it throughout the country in colleges, opera centers and conservatories as well as for opera companies in Canada, England and Italy.
