The Rosa Ponselle Foundation’s President, Miss Elayne Duke and Music Director, Maestro Igor Chichagov, have announced the appointment of Catholic University’s Music Department Chairman, Dr. Michael Cordovana to head up the musical preparation of the Rosa Ponselle “ALL MARYLANDERS’” Competition awardees for the Rosa Ponselle “Showcase” Concerts.
An annual Eastertime event, the “Showcase” Concert serves as the centerpiece to the Rosa Ponselle “ALL MARYLANDERS’” Competition. The next “Showcase” Concert will take place on March 27 at Goucher College’s Kraushaar Theater at 8:00 P.M. The public is invited to attend the Competition and Concert at no charge.
The Annual Rosa Ponselle “ALL MARYLANDERS’” Competition, which is to enter its 8th presentment next March 24 to 28, 1999, shall open its doors to Washington, D.C. residents beginning in the year 2000.
Dr. Michael Cordovana, who is an internationally-renowned coach and accompanist, holds a doctorate from the Catholic University of America and has studied at the Peabody Conservatory and the Aspen School of Music. He has received numerous grants for study in Germany, Austria, and Italy and has performed extensively in the United States and Europe. He has been assistant conductor for the Washington Opera and the Providence Opera Theatre, and since 1974, he has been chief assistant for the Dallas Opera Company where, in 1989, he was responsible for the musical preparation of the world premiere of Dominick Argento’s, “The Aspern Papers”, starring Frederica von Stade, Elizabeth Soderstrom, and Richard Stillwell, shown on the television broadcast, “Great Performances.” He has performed concerts with Elizabeth Soderstrom, John Aler and Carmen Balthrop. In addition, Dr. Cordovana has worked with Renata Scotto, Jon Vickers, Mateo Manuguerra, Sesto Bruscantini, and Dame Joan Sutherland, and has assisted conductors Richard Bonynge, Nicola Rescigo, and Antal Dorati, to name only a few.
He is a professor of Music at Catholic University and is also on the faculty of the Bel Canto Institute at SUNY in New Paltz, New York.
