Presented each year as an Eastertime event at Goucher College's Kraushaar Theater, the 7th Annual Rosa Ponselle "ALL MARYLANDERS'" Competition is now accepting applications from young classical singers with permanent residency in the State of Maryland, who are between ages 10 to 21.
Contestants will be adjudicated by a panel of five professionals in the field of opera. The dates of the Competition are March 18 to 22, 1998. The Competition opens with an audio/visual lecture by Miss Elayne Duke on the life and career of the legendary dramatic soprano, Rosa Ponselle, who is considered by many to have been the greatest vocal artist of the century. In commemoration of her centenary in 1997 and her legacy to the art of singing, the United States Postal Service has recently dedicated a 32 cent postage stamp to her with its unveiling in the month of September 1997 in New York City at the Metropolitan Opera House, Meriden, Connecticut (her home town) and Baltimore, Maryland at Morgan State University.
There is no application fee for admission to the "ALL MARYLANDERS"' Competition and young singers are invited to telephone, fax or write to The Rosa Ponselle Foundation for the Competition brochure and application. The deadline date for application submissions is January 31, 1998.
There are three awards to be given in the Gold, Silver and Bronze Medalists categories with a $1,500 scholarship to each Laureate in the form of concert preparation and $500 in cash to be paid on the night of the Winners "Showcase" Concert appearance. Additionally, there are ten Silver Rose Awards of $300 each payable in cash on the day of the awards ceremony and an appearance in the Winners "Showcase" Concert. Five Honorable Mention Awardees will each receive cash awards of $200 and may, possibly, be invited to perform in the "Showcase" Concert.
The official accompanist for the Competition will be William Lewis of New York City.
The centerpiece of the "ALL MARYLANDERS'" Competition will be the 7th Annual "Winners" Showcase Concert on Saturday, March 21, 1998 at 8:00 P.M. in Goucher College's Kraushaar Theater. The Concert will feature the previous year's "ALL MARYLANDERS'" Medalists and Silver Rose Awardees. The public is invited to attend at no charge, and concert goers may request up to two complimentary tickets by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to The Rosa Ponselle Foundation, "Windsor", Stevenson, Maryland 21153-9999.
