CENTENARY YEAR ROSA PONSELLE
"YOUNG NEW YORKERS'" COMPETITION
OPEN TO ASPIRING CLASSICAL SINGERS

The second annual presentment of The Rosa Ponselle Foundation's Competition will offer CASH PRIZE AWARDS, scholarships and "Showcase" Concert appearances to residents of the five boroughs of New York who are within the age ranges of l0 to 2l years.

The Rosa Ponselle Foundation was established in l982 with funds from the estate of the legendary Metropolitan Opera soprano who is considered by many to have been the greatest singer born and trained entirely in the United States.

The year l997 marks the l00th anniversary of the birth of Rosa Ponselle. The occasion is to be celebrated worldwide with radio and TV broadcasts, audio/visual lectures, concerts and costume exhibits.

Endorsed by the New York City Board of Education, the Ponselle Foundation's "YOUNG NEW YORKERS'" Vocal Competition will be conducted in cooperation with New York's public, private and parochial schools.

The actual Competition will take place when the first l00 applicants will audition for a jury of prominent musicians and members of the musical community from June 20 to 27, l997 at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall. The program will feature a reception with the jury members; an audio/visual presentation with slides, film and recordings on the life and career of Ponselle, an awards ceremony and a "Showcase" Concert with the l996 winners of the Rosa Ponselle "YOUNG NEW YORKERS'" Competition of l996. Parents, teachers, schoolmates and friends are invited to attend each of the public Competition events. Tickets may be purchased at the Weill Recital Hall box office at $5.00. Parents of contestants will be invited, at no charge, to attend the opening reception with the jury, the audio/visual slide lecture of June 20 and the awards ceremony of June 27 at no charge.

The awards offered in the Rosa Ponselle "YOUNG NEW YORKERS'" Competition are as follows:

The Medalist Laureateship Awards

...Gold, Silver and Bronze Medallions with a $500 cash award to each of the three top awardees

...Concert appearances in l998 in New York City, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. for each of the Medalists. Expenses for hotels, travel and Concert attire are to be paid by The Rosa Ponselle Foundation

...A $l,000 scholarship to each for the preparation of the Concert appearances with renowned vocal coach and Music Director of The Rosa Ponselle Foundation, Maestro Igor Chichagov.

...Sterling silver roses, Rosa Ponselle recordings and a diploma

The Silver Rose Awards

...Ten cash awards of $300 each to each recipient

...Concert preparation by Maestro Igor Chichagov for the l998 New York City performance only. Concert attire provided

...Silver Roses, Rosa Ponselle recordings and a diploma

Honorable Mention Awards

...Five cash awards of $200 each

...Silver roses, Rosa Ponselle recordings and a diploma

All Competition candidates will receive IN PERSON evaluations from the adjudicators on June 27, following the Awards Ceremony.

Official accompanists will be provided for the Competition.

The deadline date for all application submissions is February 28, l997.
